Title: CCWA Advocates for Gender Equality and HIV/AIDS Awareness among Caribbean Youths
By Line

Short Story
A three-day workshop was held by the Caribbean Coalition on Women, Girls and AIDS (CCWA) in collaboration with the Department of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (DPHPM) on Wednesday December 14 to Friday December 16, 2011.

SGU Alumni and CCWA Project Coordinator, Marina Hilaire-Bartlett, SGUMPH’06, stated that the primary objective of the workshop was to generate awareness of HIV/AIDS, and to encourage the use of social media as a means of advocacy among youths. According to Mrs. Hilaire-Bartlett, the Caribbean has the second highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS.

Full Story
The UNDP sponsored workshop focused on Gender and HIV, which included sessions on socialization, gender-based violence among youths, leadership and advocacy, and how young persons can effect change. The second component looked at technology and focused on internet literacy, safety, and security.

In attendance were twenty persons who represented the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the Grenada chapter of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Partnership (GRENCHAP), Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Grenada Planned Parenthood, and Youth Division, inclusive of an SGU student and member of staff.

Mrs. Bartlett and facilitators Chrystal Brizan and Camille Pagee commended the enthusiasm of the participants as they engaged with the various topics presented. According to the project coordinator, they are eager to continue collaborating with St. George’s University as they endeavor to expand their reach and scope.

“The CCWA was developed as an advocacy body where persons from across the region come together to advocate for gender-responsive HIV programs that take into account the needs of women/girls and their vulnerabilities,” stated Mrs. Bartlett. The SGUMPH Graduate currently works at UN Women and is attached to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women.
