Title: Launch of the Grenadian Psychological Association

Dr. Zuri Amuleru-Marshall, GPA President

On November 1, 2011, the Grenadian Psychological Association (GPA) launched its newly formed organization to the Grenadian public at an informational session held at Caribbean House, St. George’s University.

In attendance were approximately 80 persons inclusive of community members, SGU faculty and students, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and the Grenada Medical Association.

GPA President, Dr. Zuri Amuleru-Marshall, opened the ceremony by providing introductory remarks about the nature, purpose and functions of the Association, She also presented a general overview of the field of psychology stating: “Psychology is a field that is often misunderstood, and there are many misconceptions about what psychologists do.” According to the GPA president, “One of the things the Association plans to do is to educate and inform the public about the wide range of services that psychologists can provide to help solve problems in Grenada, including personal, family, community, and societal issues.”

Dr. Amuleru-Marshall described psychology as far-reaching, with many schools of thought having developed over the years. She offered a general definition of psychology as “the study of the mind, mental processes, and behavior.” Several members spoke about their specialties within the field, highlighting the uniqueness of each area and educating attendees about the broad scope of Psychology. Dr. Terry Ruthrauff spoke about Clinical Psychology; Ms. Margot Holas described her work in Counseling Psychology, as well as her work with organizations; Dr. Zuri Amuleru-Marshall described School Psychology, Educational Psychology, as well as Developmental Psychology; and Dr. Omowale Amuleru-Marshall enlightened the audience on the work of Public Health psychologists.

The members of the Executive Board of the Grenadian Psychological Association are: Dr. Zuri Amuleru-Marshall, President; Ms. Margot Holas, President-Elect; Dr. Brenda Kirkby, Secretary; Ms. Wendy Romain, Assistant Secretary; and Ms. Denise Lewis, Treasurer.

About the GPA: The GPA is a non-profit association dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of psychological knowledge, skills and practice in the service of human well-being and health promotion. The GPA aims to advance the field of psychology in Grenada and surrounding regions through workshops, conferences, seminars, publications, services and other related activities.
