Short Story
The 7th season of SGU Knowledge Bowl concluded with an intense battle between defending champion Westmorland Secondary School (WSS) and Presentation Brothers’ College (PBC) on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Charter Hall, St. George’s University. After three thrilling rounds of competition which kept audience members at home and on location at the edge of their seats, PBC emerged victorious. The PBC boys gave a very good show of themselves increasing their one point lead at the end of round one to an eight point lead at the end of the second round. In the third and final round, WSS, who made a valiant effort to gain the upper hand and retain the challenge trophy, narrowed the gap to only two points at the end of the competition, with PBC claiming the victory 43:41.
Last Saturday’s competition marked the third time that PBC has reached the finals and the second time that it has captured the trophy. The only other school that has won the trophy and entered the finals as many times is St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George’s. As winners, the PBC team secured for their school a grand prize of $10,000. Also, the five team members, Jeffon Telesford, Eric Steele, Neil Titus, Joshua Keens-Douglas and Skakir Julien, were awarded a laptop computer, $500 in their choice of a Super Starter or Honey Bee account with Grenada Cooperative Bank and certificates of distinction.

For placing second, the WSS team has won $5,000 for their school, a laptop for each member of their team, $250 in their choice of Super Starter or Honey Bee accounts and certificates of achievement. Aden McMillan and Jamie Samuel, and Kerricia Hopson and Roland Antoine, the hardworking coaches of the PBC and WSS teams respectively were also awarded special prizes. The semi-finalists, St. David’s Catholic Secondary School and Grenada Boys Secondary School, received certificates of merit for their commendable performance. Finally, all participants from each of the 19 schools that entered the competition received a certificate of participation.
The students were high in praise for SGU Knowledge Bowl and several noted that despite the long and grueling hours of preparation, they felt that they really benefited from the experience and are very optimistic going into their CSEC exams because of the additional preparation it afforded them. Knowledge Bowl, in addition to being a preparatory exercise, fosters social interaction among third, fourth and fifth form students. The students are quizzed in areas of Science, Information Technology, Arts & Humanities, Geography, Spanish, Bible Knowledge, Food & Nutrition, Culture, Sports and Current Affairs. The competition continues to be a highly anticipated and well supported event each year and continues to foster friendly competition among the nation's secondary schools, making it truly ‘the inter-col of academia’.
