Title: Drs. Shivayogi and Bharti Bhusnurmath Make Waves in AIPNA
By Line

Short Story
Dr. Shivayogi Bhusnurmath, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Chair of the Department of Pathology at St. George’s University, was recently appointed as Executive Director of the Association of Indian Pathologists in North America (AIPNA). This appointment makes it possible to expand the association’s reach within medical institutions and communities in India. Dr. S. Bhusnurmath has served as co-chair of the Pathology education wing of AIPNA for the past six years with his wife, Dr. Bharti Bhusnurmath, who is also Professor of Pathology and Director of the Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at SGU.

Dr. S. Bhusnurmath stated “We were appointed co-chairs of the pathology wing because of our academic background in teaching. We have brought a lot of changes to St. George’s University in terms of facilitating an active learning environment in a clinical context, and it is our hope to bring these changes to medical schools in India.”

With this new appointment he says, “There are a lot of organizational responsibilities, but I am excited to do more for the association. We are trying to expand the annual Continuing Medical Education Seminars (CMEs) into multiple CMEs while working ‘one-on-one’ with medical institutions to ensure that the benefits are transferred to the communities in which they operate.”

Dr. Bhusnurmath spoke of the relationship between AIPNA and St. George’s University, and the direct benefits to our medical students. “Throughout the years, cutting edge academicians have taught at SGU as visiting professors within the pathology department, and there are several graduates who are either employed, or have been given residency placements within their practices.”

This international networking has yielded rich benefits to SGU in terms of recruitment of teaching faculty, students, clinical tutor teaching fellowship programs, the India Selective for SGU students, and enhancements in the medical pathology diagnostic services at SGU. Drs Bharti and Shivayogi Bhusnurmath have been involved with over 60 international CMEs, workshops, conferences on pathology and medical education in the past six years. Dr. Bhusnurmath is confident that this relationship will continue to grow and will give more exposure to the brilliant graduates coming out of St. George’s University. He stated, “We are both very grateful to the continued support of the administration of St. George’s University for supporting these international activities.”

The Association of Indian pathologists in North America (AIPNA) was established in 1992 and has approximately 600 members. All the executive council members and office bearers provide voluntary service for the betterment of pathology practice and education standards in India.

Professor Vinay Kumar, Chair of Pathology at the University of Chicago and the lead editor of Robbins pathology text book is a leading patron of the organization and is a good friend of St Georges University. AIPNA has conducted numerous international CMEs and workshops with the primary goal of enhancing pathology education and services throughout India.
