Rachér Croney
Short Story
Three lucky students were each the recipients of an award valued at EC$6,000 from St. George’s University, as part of the Independence Scholarship Awards Program (ISAP).

ISAP, which is in its ninth year, awards scholarships to the overall top performer at the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) and also the top performers of two randomly selected primary schools.

The students will each be given EC$1,200 per year for the next five years to assist with academic expenses related to their secondary school education such as school uniforms, supplies and transportation.

Full Story
According to the Assistant Dean of Enrolment Planning Colin Dowe, “It is important to us to assist the Grenadian community in having access to education. While there is universal secondary education we’re very much aware that parents are ‘hard-pressed’ because of economic challenges to get their children to school on a daily basis.”

In 2012 the top performer in Grenada was Ms. Kiana Slocombe from Beacon Junior. The two randomly selected schools were St. Louis RC Girls’ School and St. Giles Anglican School. From St. Louis R.C, the top performer was Jayde Philbert, and from St. Giles Anglican, the top performer was Avia Dottin.

Currently, there are fifteen students on SGU ISAP scholarships in various secondary schools throughout Grenada. The Independence Scholarship Awards program was launched in 2004 to commemorate Grenada’s 30th Independence anniversary. Since its inception, a total of 27 students have been awarded scholarships. These students have continued to perform well as several have gone on to pursue and complete degrees at T.A Marryshow Community College and are currently employed. Among them, one recipient is currently enrolled here at St. George’s University School of Medicine in the Pre-Med program.

St. George’s University continues to show its commitment to education in Grenada as ISAP goes into its tenth year of providing an opportunity for students to ‘Think Beyond!’
