Short Story
Over 1000 secondary school students and young adults converged on St. George’s University’s True Blue campus for the 2012 SGU and Grenada Rotaract Club (GRC) Career Day on Saturday, March 31 at what proved the biggest and best career day yet. Geared at showcasing careers and educational opportunities which can assist students and young adults in answering the oft-difficult question of what career to choose and empowering them to make that choice, Career Day featured a variety of careers including guidance and counseling, biology, ecology and conservation, medicine and veterinary medicine, law, communications, business, engineering, dentistry, audio visual, telecommunications, entertainment, security / policing, tourism, social sciences, nursing and IT/Graphic Design.
Colin Dowe, Assistant Dean of Enrollment Planning at SGU, in his address at the opening ceremony of the event stated: “There are a lot of careers out there that utilize and can utilize your interest and strength, creating a niche for everyone… As you explore today, I challenge you to think beyond. It is critically important for your generation to think beyond form 5 and college, and I therefore challenge you to continue developing yourselves for you, your families, Grenada and for the region.”
Mr. Dowe advised the students to ask themselves in their quest to find their career: “What do I like, and what am I good at?” He also advised the students on how to make the best of their Career Day experience – to inquire about the educational background and skills needed for the job, what educational path leads to the career, whether additional training would be required and what qualities an employer looks for in an applicant. Following the welcome session, the students attended career workshops of their choice, a session on preparing for the job market, and a presentation by the Rotaract Club on how to dress for the job.

Marcelle Strachan-Mitchell, Recruitment Support Officer within the Office of Enrolment Planning and one of the persons responsible for organizing the event, commented: “Career Day 2012 was a huge success. This year we had the best turnout ever with over 1000 persons in attendance. We received very positive feedback from the students. Many of them expressed that they were very happy with the careers showcased and the way they were delivered.”
This year, Career Day was made even more impactful by the fact that a Career Guide booklet, produced and published by SGU and the GRC, was presented to the students which gave them information they could take away on all the careers showcased. Usually students only get to experience presentations on two careers of their choice, but with the addition of this booklet, they also got the opportunity to peruse careers that they could not have attended presentations on.
Career Day 2012 has yet again delivered on assisting students to make informed career choices and to ‘think beyond’ in their journey towards educational and career fulfillment.
