Short Story
Sixth term veterinary student within St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine program, Megan Greer, took her veterinary experience to a whole new level on an adventurous trip to South Africa during the summer.
Ms. Greer traveled to South Africa in June for twenty days through ‘World Wide Experience’ – a conservation-based organization, as part of the Vets Go Wild Program. Joining Megan in this experience was a total of 17 participants. Represented were persons from Europe, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Texas, along with a professor from Texas A&M University.
Megan Greer and the ‘Vets Go Wild’ team participated in a conservation effort where some of the world’s most exotic animals were tagged, relocated, treated or administered various vitamins and antibiotics. DNA and blood samples were taken from rhinos along with ear catheters for reversal agents. Necropsies were also performed on dolphins, seals and zebras.

The sixth term student spoke of her confidence in the field having been exposed to an active learning environment at St. George’s University. She remarked, “Although I was the only student from SGU and some students were further advanced, I felt very confident in conducting the procedures because of the hands-on experience and research opportunities I was exposed to. Thanks to St. George’s University, I was able to do what a lot of the other students were unable to – the experience was truly second to none.”
Upon completion of the 20-day conservation effort, Greer attests that her desire to be a veterinarian has only been strengthened. “I’ve always wanted to be a vet, and since then I’ve been working towards that goal. I looked at other avenues in undergrad and had job opportunities in biochemistry and genetics, but between being stuck in a lab all day and working as a vet – nothing compares to the passion I have for veterinary medicine.”
Megan Greer is from North California and is currently the president of the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners (AASRP) under the University’s Large Animal Society (LAS). She is set to complete her veterinary studies in 2013, and looks forward to applying to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to work in under-served areas.
St. George’s University commends Megan on a job well done, and wishes her further success in the pursuit of a career in veterinary medicine.
