Short Story
Eight clinical tutors achieved the opportunity to begin their 2012 residencies in the United States.

Dr. Frances McGill, professor within the Clinical Skills Department stated, “Many of our teaching fellows strive towards residency in the US or Post Graduate education in the UK. This year we are very proud to congratulate those who ‘matched’ or ‘pre-matched’ and left to begin their July 2012 residencies."

Full Story
An innovative “Preparation for Residency” program was created in the summer of 2009. In addition to the clinical tutorship responsibilities, participants attend three evening seminars annually: Writing the Personal Statement, Interviewing for Residency, and The Match. Each tutor’s personal statement is reviewed, and each tutor as a session role playing a postgraduate interview with Dr. McGill prior to departing for the formal interview.

Dr. McGill explains that the keys to success are excellent USMLE Step scores, networking, research /US experience, and a solid commitment to individual goals, as the positions are very competitive.

The Teaching and Research Fellowship offers physicians from around the world an opportunity to spend two years at St. George’s University School of Medicine, teaching students in small groups and laboratories under the guidance of full time senior faculty. Dr. McGill states, “It is the commitment of the clinical tutors to SGU students, as well as to their own continued education which makes this a successful program.”

The July 2012 resident placements were:

· Dr. Olufemi Adunse - Forbes Medical Center , PA – Family Medicine

· Dr. Kanika Arora - University of Alabama – Neurology

· Dr. Celestine Ishiekwene - Coney Island Hospital , Brooklyn , NY – Internal Medicine

The Preparation for Residency Program is headed by Francis McGill, MD, SGU ’81 who explained her initial involvement with the program as a personal connection. “I was asked by Dr. Tejpreet Lamba, a then clinical tutor, to guide him and his colleague, since my career prior to becoming a full time faculty member had been in academic clinical medicine. It became clear that guidance could help valuable members of the health care community gain necessary postgraduate training.”

Hearty congratulations are extended to all clinical tutor residents on a job well done!
