Short Story
Michaela Valenti, a third term medical student of St. George’s University, donated over 100 pairs of sneakers to the Grand Anse R.C. Primary School on Monday, September 10, 2012 as part of the ‘Healthy Grenada Project’ of the Grenada chapter of the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA).
Ms. Valenti single-handedly organized a donation drive in Florida, placing posters at her local primary school – St. Andrews Catholic School, and various community centers where persons readily patronized this drive. Valenti stated, “As part of the Healthy Grenada Project, we have been visiting the Grand Anse R.C. School promoting physical education and healthy eating. The idea to donate sneakers was part of this project, and to ensure students were fully equipped to participate in the physical activities.” The IFMSA club member noted that the donations received were overwhelming and exceeded all expectations.
During the presentation, Acting Principal of Grand R.C. Primary School, Mrs. Jane Antoine-Pierre stated, “We are very happy and thankful for the assistance from this group because what they are doing, we could not have done by ourselves. This donation places us in a better position to cater to the holistic needs of our students in an environment that facilitates optimum learning.”
IFMSA-Grenada is an international forum for medical students in Grenada which connects them to the worldwide IFMSA community.
