A team from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed University (KIMS University) in Karad, India, one of several international universities with which St. George’s University partners to hold a selective paid a visit to SGU this May. The team comprised of Dr. Suresh Bhosale, Vice Chancellor and professor of surgery, Dr. Ram Krishna Ayachit, Dean, Director of Health Sciences and professor or Opthalmology accompanied by his wife Mrs. Jayshree Ram Ayachit, and Miss Archana Mohan Kaulagekar, Assistant Registrar (Academics) and International Student Advisor.
Drs. Bhosale and Ayachit and Ms. Kaulagekar have all worked very closely with both batches of students who have so far completed the program and they had the opportunity to meet with them as well as the next batch of students scheduled to travel in July. Twenty-five students are in this new batch and this increase in number can be attributed to the past success of the program and the glowing reviews shared by the past participants.

One of these students, Jordan Watson, has described her experience as “enlightening” and “overwhelming” and said that the experience served to remind her and her classmates of the reason they chose to become doctors in the first place, a reason, she said, which can become blurred amid the rigors of student life. “You remember that you’re here to help people,” she said. The students also made a great impression on the KIMS professors who described them as “very enthusiastic, keen to learn and well adjusted.”
Drs. Shivayogi and Bharti Bhusnurmath have played a significant role in bringing about this collaboration. They visited KIMS for a workshop in January 2010 and immediately saw how our students could benefit from the experience – a safe campus with state of the art facilities and wonderful and adept faculty that would provide exposure to a rich, cross-cultural medical setting. The selective runs for two weeks, is held twice a year – in July and December – and exposes students to every field of medicine.
The delegates reported thoroughly enjoying their visit and being impressed by the lovely SGU campus and the hospitable people. They said that they learnt quite a lot from their meetings with various departments at SGU including the Department of Educational Services and the Psychological Services Centre. Dr. Bhosale, thrilled with the success of the program, says that he looks forward to strengthening the collaboration between the two universities in such areas as faculty and student exchange and research collaboration.
