Title: How CPR Helped Save My Child’s Life - by Kisher Roberts, GAP Caregiver and Mom
By Line

Short Story
I was home lying in my bed one Saturday night when I heard my baby having difficulties breathing. I ran to him. While I held my baby, his body went rigid in my arms and his face started turning blue.

At first, I panicked. I didn’t know what to do! I laid him down on the floor and checked all his vital signs. I checked to see if he was still breathing. My son had a weak pulse and he was not breathing. I knew I had to do something to help him or he would die.

I began to breathe into his mouth over and over, but still nothing. I kept trying but his pulse was quickly fading away. I felt a rush of adrenaline come over me. I breathed into his mouth again and pumped on his chest like I was taught in First Aid class.
Full Story
I kept giving him CPR until my brother came to bring us to the hospital. Soon after starting the CPR, maybe a few minutes, he started breathing again. We rushed him to the hospital and he was admitted to the ICU.

My son spent a week and three days in the hospital. To this day, I still wonder what might have happened if I had not learned how to do CPR. How would I have been able to forgive myself if my son had died? My son is alive today because I remembered what I was trained to do. To all parents and teachers, if you ever have the chance to learn First Aid and CPR, take it; it could save the life of someone you love on day.

I would like to thank the Grand Anse Playgroup Administration and St. George’s University for providing me the chance to go to the CPR training. I cannot thank them enough for the support and guidance they have given me throughout this trying time. It is because of them, especially the GAP team, that I am my child’s very own hero.
