Short Story
Dr. Ghalayini joined SGU’s School of Medicine as professor of Biochemistry in January 2011. Prior to joining SGU, he was course coordinator of medical biochemistry/cell biology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at University of the West Indies in Barbados (2008-2010) and course director at the Medical University of the Americas (2004-2008) in Nevis, West Indies.
In addition to his medical school teaching experience in the Caribbean, Dr. Ghalayini, has had two faculty appointments at Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, in Houston, Texas and at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (Oklahoma City, OK) departments of Ophthalmology and Cell biology. Dr. Ghalayini’s academic tenure spans over 25 years in medical education and basic science research.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Ghalayini received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Full Story
Dr. Ghalayini’s research efforts have been funded over the years by several funding agencies including the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the US. During his academic tenure in the US, he has mentored and trained several undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral fellows. He has served as an ad-hoc grant reviewer for NIH and as an ad-hoc reviewer for several scientific journals. He has been a member of American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular biology for nearly two decades.
Over the past decade, in addition to his passion for scientific discovery, Dr. Ghalayini has discovered a new passion, the passion to teach. In joining SGU, he hopes to contribute effectively to the educational mission of the School of Medicine in general and the Biochemistry department, in particular. This includes efforts to continually optimize the delivery of course material and refine course assessment strategies while integrating basic science knowledge into a bigger and physiologically relevant picture. In addition, Dr. Ghalayini envisions participation in the development of a graduate program in biochemistry/cell biology along with the initiation of research projects that could attract and train both medical and graduate students at SGU. For these efforts, he would like to initiate a collaborative summer-research training program in selected research laboratories in the US. As a new member of the department, he would also like to contribute to undergraduate biochemistry education in the department as well as the newly established nursing program at SGU.
For several years, Dr. Ghalayini has enjoyed the natural beauty of the Caribbean and the warmth of its people. Grenada is the third Caribbean island he has chosen to reside in and he anticipates that his tenure at SGU will be professionally and personally, a rewarding and an enjoyable experience.
