Short Story
St. George’s University’s transportation department along with the SGU community says farewell to one of its longest serving bus drivers, who is also renowned for his wit and humor, Mr. Leroy ‘Ras’ McSween. Mr. McSween has been employed with the University since March 1993, and retired in February 2012, after providing over eighteen years of invaluable service.
The retiree describes his appointment at the University as an act of fate, stating ‘he was just at the right place, at the right time.’ He also attests his good fortune to reciprocated kindness. Mr. McSween recalls that at his time of employment the main campus was based in Grand Anse, with just about two buildings in True Blue. Today, however, he states, “it is a city in and of itself.”
As a driver within the Transportation Department he states, “I really enjoyed being in here; I loved what I was doing and tried to do it to the best of my ability.” The biggest challenge he mentioned was constantly being mindful of the lives placed in his care each time he sat behind the wheel.

After years of dedicated service Mr. McSween expressed that there is truly no easy way to say goodbye. He states, “After working among the students and staff for so many years, they become like family, and it is sad to know you have to leave them.” His fondest memories, he articulated, will be of the people. “I will miss the people most of all. This is what makes you feel happy, not just driving and working in SGU, but it made me happy to be around people that showed me great respect and love.” His commitment to the University was also reaffirmed as he stated his willingness to always be of service, where and when needed.
Upon retiring, Mr. McSween hopes to pursue self employment in the area of transportation. St. George’s University extends heartfelt thanks to ‘Ras’ for his years of service and dedication to the Transportation Department and for his contribution to the spirit of SGU.
We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
