Short Story
Alana A. Praimdass, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with specialization in International Politics, delivered the valedictory address for the School of Arts and Sciences. In her address, Alana highlighted how her class’ unique and rich academic and non-academic experience at SGU had benefited them. She said: “The School of Arts and Sciences invited us to become ourselves here…St. George’s University has challenged us all to ‘think beyond’. Thinking beyond implies that within the mind, there are no limitations, that we should put our imagination to work. It allows us to imagine what has never been, to ask new questions and to go beyond merely finding the answers. It involves expanding our boundaries and reaching for what isn’t tangible yet..."

"...St. George’s University realizes that the only way to discover the limits of the possible is by going beyond them, reaching for the impossible….As we continue to expand our knowledge, we will continue to become empowered, and with this power, we will endow ourselves with the ability to define what the world prioritizes, what the world takes on, and ultimately what the world shall become.” In closing, she reminded her classmates of their responsibility to the University as alumni and urged them to fulfill it not only by maintaining contact with the school and participating in alumni activities and initiatives but also through creating a positive impact on their home communities.
Alana was born in Trinidad in 1988 and is her parents’ only child. She is one of the first of her family to attain tertiary education and is the first to study outside of Trinidad and Tobago. She has excelled academically since her early years of education and is a past pupil of the A.S.J.A. Girls’ College and the St. Joseph’s Convent, both prestigious schools in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. From her secondary school years, Alana took an interest in the sciences and successfully pursued a Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination Diploma in Life Sciences. Recognising the importance of the legal profession in protecting the social, political, economic, cultural and religious freedoms of progressive societies and also out of a desire to help people, Alana was drawn to law. With five Advanced Level passes and strong SAT scores, Alana was accepted to several universities, but she chose St. George’s University to which she matriculated in August 2008.
At St. George’s University, Alana has displayed continued academic excellence, consistently earning positions on both the Chancellor's and Dean's Lists. She has avidly participated in university activities and held leadership positions in several student organisations and committees. She has served as Secretary of the Undergraduate Student Government Association and as Committee Chair for Academic Affairs and Housing in the Student Government Association, and has also founded and served as President of St. George’s University’s Model United Nations group. Alana is a model student who embodies the high standard of St. George's University.
