Issue Number: 194 Issue Date: 04/23/2013 Front Page News People Events All Issues Bioethics and Public Health Research Project Awarded Wellcome Trust Grant Left: Dr. Cheryl Cox-Macpherson, Right: Dr. Muge Akpinar-Elci Two St. George’s University faculty members, Dr. Cheryl Cox-Macpherson and Dr. Muge Akpinar-Elci, have been awarded a US $8,000 Wellcome Trust Grant for their research project “Bioethics and Health in the Caribbean: Climate Change” which will investigate perceptions of Caribbean health professionals on the impact climate change is having on the health of residents in the region. Bringing together two medical disciplines – bioethics and public health – this research is a model for the value of cross-disciplinary collaborations. Full Story Saving Our Ecosystem One Step at a Time; SGU Students Talk Recycling in Grenada St. George's University students held a recycling symposium to support the efforts of the Grenada Government in controlling the effects of waste on the environment in Grenada. Attended by faculty, staff and students from St. George’s University and T.A Marryshow Community College, Education Conservation Outreach (ECO), a student-led environmental organization, held the symposium on March 18. Helping to further the ongoing efforts of the Grenada Solid Waste Management, the symposium was created to help residents focus on recycling and waste disposal by emphasizing responsibility and accountability. FullStory Inaugural SGU Knowledge Bowl Champs Do it Again St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George’s (SJC) has captured the SGU Knowledge Bowl championship for the third time in the competition’s 8-year history. The school won the very first Knowledge Bowl trophy in 2006, were victorious again in 2009 and placed second in 2011. At this year’s final match, the team went head to head with the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) at Charter Hall, St. George’s University on March 23, emerging the victor after three rounds of competition. As champion, SJC took home the coveted Knowledge Bowl Challenge trophy, $15,000 cash prize and individual prizes for each team member and coach. FullStory

SGU Graduate to Start Endoscopy Unit at General Hospital St. George’s University alumnus, Dr. Patrick Tempara, SGUSOM ’86 has donated equipment valued at over US $200,000 to the General Hospital, Grenada to create the hospital’s very own endoscopy unit. FullStory Grenada Hosts First Caribbean Bee College This past January, Grenada was abuzz with beekeepers from around the region here to attend the first Caribbean Bee College (CBC). Seasoned apiculturists, as well as amateurs and hobbyists, enjoyed a stimulating three-day program which included lectures, hands-on sessions and tours of local apiaries.
